Dance Community Specialist at orangecountydumpster Unipessoal
For over a decade, I've been building vibrant social dance spaces across Portugal—from beachside gatherings in Cascais to themed evenings in Lisbon. My mission is simple: create welcoming communities where dancers over 45 can learn, celebrate, and belong.
Back in 2010, I was volunteering at a cultural center in Cascais. Simple enough. But I kept noticing the same thing—older adults weren't dancing. The studios had programs for kids, for young professionals, but anyone over 45? They were basically invisible.
I started asking questions. Why weren't there social dance events for this group? The answer kept coming back: "There's no market." I didn't buy that. So I organized a small gathering on the beach one Saturday evening. Just kizomba, some refreshments, maybe 20 people I could find through word of mouth.
Forty-three people showed up.
That's when it clicked for me. It wasn't about creating something new—it was about noticing what was missing and filling the gap. Over the next few years, I studied event management at Instituto Superior de Gestão in Lisbon and got certified in both kizomba and salsa instruction through the Associação Portuguesa de Dança Latina. But the real education came from organizing. Every event taught me something about what dancers needed, what made them comfortable, what kept them coming back.
In 2019, I launched the "Rhythm & Connection" weekly meetups. The idea was to create a judgment-free space where dancers could learn, socialize, and genuinely enjoy themselves. Within two years, we were hosting over 150 regular participants. That's when I knew this wasn't just a hobby—it was my actual work.
I focus on creating authentic dance experiences that build real community and lasting connections.
I've organized hundreds of kizomba and salsa gatherings across Portugal. From intimate beginner sessions to full-scale themed evenings, each event is designed to welcome dancers of all levels and backgrounds.
Cascais has become my home base for beachside socials. There's something special about dancing with the ocean nearby—it creates a relaxed, celebratory atmosphere that keeps people coming back.
Themed nights bring energy and personality to regular gatherings. Whether it's "Retro Rhythms" or "Latin Fusion," I design experiences that feel fresh, engaging, and genuinely fun for participants.
Building a dance community means understanding what mature dancers need: accessible venues, patient instruction, social connection. I help communities develop sustainable programs that actually last.
I specialize in weekend gatherings because that's when busy adults can actually participate. The logistics matter—venue selection, timing, music choices—and I've got 14 years of real experience making it work.
At orangecountydumpster Unipessoal, I create detailed guides that help other organizers and dancers navigate the world of social dance. Practical, specific, actionable—no fluff.
I've watched quiet, hesitant people transform through regular dancing. Not because of fitness metrics, but because they felt welcomed, capable, and connected. That's the real outcome I'm after.
Dancers over 45 are some of the most engaged, committed participants I've worked with. They bring maturity, humor, and genuine interest in community. They deserve the same attention as any other age group.
Beautiful venues don't help if they're hard to reach or uncomfortable to enter. Good instruction doesn't work if beginners feel judged. Every detail—parking, seating areas, music volume, pacing—affects whether people feel welcome.
I organize events because communities need them, not because there's money in it. That shift in perspective changes everything about how you approach the work. Quality improves. People notice.
